Young Writers’ Enrichment Club

Where young writers discover ideas, develop their voices, and create work worth sharing.

The Jordan Hill Young Writers’ Enrichment Club is an online Saturday writing community for primary and secondary students who enjoy creating, exploring ideas, and expressing themselves through words.

Through lively workshops, students experiment with stories, poetry, non-fiction, scripts, and other forms of creative writing. They learn how writers find inspiration, develop ideas, make purposeful language choices, revise their work, and write for real readers.

Every student develops a personal writing portfolio during the term and prepares a selected piece for the Jordan Hill Young Writers’ Online Exhibition at the end of each term.

Young people have ideas, experiences, questions, and imagined worlds that deserve space to grow.

The Young Writers’ Enrichment Club gives students that space. It brings young writers together in an encouraging community where they can experiment, take creative risks, share their work, and become more confident in their own voices.

The club welcomes enthusiastic writers as well as students who need encouragement to recognise that they have something valuable to say.

What will students gain?

By the end of the term, students will have had opportunities to:

• Discover and develop original ideas

• Experiment with different genres and forms

• Build confidence in expressing themselves

• Make purposeful choices about words, sentences, structure, and voice

• Write with a clearer awareness of audience and purpose

• Give and receive thoughtful feedback

• Revise and improve selected pieces

• Develop a personal writing portfolio

• Prepare work for an authentic audience

• Become part of a supportive community of young writers

Primary Young Writers’ Club

For students in Years 3 to 6, or the equivalent stage of primary education.

Primary students explore writing through imaginative prompts, storytelling games, model texts, guided activities, and opportunities to share their ideas.

They may create:

• Short stories

• Poems

• Character descriptions

• Personal narratives

• Plays and dialogues

• Letters and journal entries

• Informative and persuasive pieces

• Writing inspired by pictures, objects, memories, and real experiences

The sessions help students expand their imaginations, organise their ideas, select effective words, construct engaging sentences, and experience the satisfaction of completing original pieces.

Our approach to young writers

At Jordan Hill, we believe that young writers need both freedom and guidance.

Students are encouraged to explore their own interests, experiences, and imaginations while receiving clear teaching that helps them develop their craft. We value originality, curiosity, reflection, perseverance, and respect for every writer’s developing voice.

The purpose of the club extends beyond producing technically accurate writing. We want students to experience writing as a way of thinking, discovering, communicating, creating, and participating in the world.

Original thinking in a digital age

Young people are growing up with increasing access to artificial intelligence and other digital writing tools.

The club helps students understand that technology can support learning, but it cannot replace the imagination, judgement, experience, and individual voice of the writer.

Activities therefore protect and strengthen independent thinking. Students are encouraged to generate their own ideas, make their own creative decisions, and take responsibility for the work they present as their own.

Secondary Young Writers’ Club

For students in Years 7 to 11, or the equivalent stage of secondary education.

Secondary students develop greater control, independence, and confidence as writers. They experiment with genre, perspective, structure, voice, and audience while learning how to refine an initial idea into a carefully crafted piece.

They may explore:

• Short fiction

• Poetry and spoken word

• Memoir and personal essays

• Journalism and feature writing

• Reviews and opinion writing

• Playwriting and screenwriting

• Speeches and persuasive writing

• Writing for digital audiences

The club supports students in developing their own voices while strengthening the creative and critical skills that contribute to effective writing across school subjects.

What happens during a Saturday session?

Each group meets online for one hour every Saturday.

A typical session may include:

• A creative opening activity

• Exploration of a short model text or example

• Discussion of a writer’s choices

• Guided development of ideas

• Independent writing time

• Opportunities to share work

• Thoughtful feedback from the tutor and other students

• A clear writing goal to continue beyond the session

Sessions are interactive, purposeful, and appropriate for each age group.

Who can join?

The club is open to students in Nigeria, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, and other countries.

Students do not need to consider themselves accomplished writers before joining. The club is suitable for:

• Students who already enjoy creative writing

• Students with many ideas who need help developing them

• Students who would benefit from greater writing confidence

• Students who want to experiment beyond ordinary classroom assignments

• Students who would enjoy belonging to a community of young writers

A personal writing portfolio

Every student develops a personal portfolio throughout the term.

The portfolio records the student’s growth as a writer and may contain first ideas, planning notes, early drafts, completed pieces, tutor feedback, revisions, illustrations, and personal reflections.

Students learn that strong writing develops through imagination, thoughtful choices, reflection, and revision. By the end of the term, each student will have a meaningful collection of original work rather than a series of disconnected exercises.

The Jordan Hill Young Writers’ Online Exhibition

At the end of the term, each student selects and refines a piece for the Jordan Hill Young Writers’ Online Exhibition.

This curated digital exhibition celebrates the students’ creativity, progress, and emerging identities as writers. Families can visit the exhibition at their convenience rather than attending at a particular time.

Depending on the work selected, the exhibition may include:

• Typed stories, poems, scripts, and nonfiction

• Images of handwritten or illustrated pieces

• Artwork created to accompany the writing

• Recorded readings of poems or story extracts

• Prerecorded introductions from young authors

• Short reflections on how each piece developed

Students’ work, names, images, and recordings will only be included in accordance with Jordan Hill’s safeguarding procedures and the permissions provided by parents or guardians.
