Support Young Writers as They Develop Ideas, Skills and Confidence

Jordan Hill is seeking a patient, organised and enthusiastic Writing Assistant to support the delivery of an after school creative writing programme at partner schools in Lekki, Lagos.

The programme is designed for children aged five to eleven who wish to develop their writing beyond the classroom. Pupils will explore ideas, create stories, experiment with language and build confidence through guided writing and storytelling activities.

Working alongside the Lead Creative Writing Teacher, the Writing Assistant will help pupils participate fully in each session and receive the support they need to develop their work.

This role may be particularly suitable for an early career teacher, education graduate, teaching assistant or emerging writer who enjoys working with children and would like to develop further experience in creative writing education.

Location: Lekki, Lagos

Work arrangement: In person

Hours: 90-minute sessions during the school term. The number of sessions offered will depend on the number of participating schools and your availability.

Key Responsibilities

• Support the Lead Creative Writing Teacher during weekly creative writing sessions

• Help prepare and organise teaching materials before each session

• Encourage pupils to participate in discussions, storytelling and writing activities

• Provide additional guidance to pupils who need help understanding or completing an activity

• Help pupils organise and develop their ideas without completing the work for them

• Support younger pupils with reading instructions, handwriting and organising their materials where required

• Assist pupils in maintaining their individual writing portfolios

• Help distribute and collect writing materials and other classroom resources

• Assist with attendance records and general classroom organisation

• Observe pupils’ participation and communicate relevant information to the Lead Creative Writing Teacher

• Support positive behaviour and help maintain an encouraging learning environment

• Help prepare pupils’ work for an end of programme presentation or sharing activity

• Work professionally with the Lead Creative Writing Teacher and the school’s nominated staff

• Follow Jordan Hill and school procedures relating to safeguarding, confidentiality, behaviour, safety and pupil collection

The Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate should:

• Have an NCE, diploma or degree in Education, English, Literature, Creative Writing, Primary Education or a related field

• Have experience working with children in a school, club, educational programme or similar setting

• Have good written and spoken English

• Have an interest in storytelling, reading and children’s writing

• Be able to communicate patiently and clearly with children

• Be organised, dependable and attentive to detail

• Be able to follow instructions and work effectively with a lead teacher

• Be able to provide appropriate support without completing pupils’ work for them

• Demonstrate warmth, initiative and sound professional judgement

• Communicate professionally with pupils, colleagues and school representatives

• Be available to work in person in Lekki during the agreed afternoon period

• Understand the importance of safeguarding, confidentiality and appropriate professional boundaries when working with children

Applications may also be considered from final year students and recent graduates who can demonstrate relevant experience, maturity and a genuine commitment to working with children.

Experience supporting literacy, reading, creative writing or other educational activities would be an added advantage. Previous experience as a teaching assistant or classroom assistant would also be valuable.
