Lead Creative Writing Teacher

Help Young Writers Discover Their Ideas, Develop Their Voices and Grow in Confidence

Jordan Hill is seeking an experienced, imaginative and dependable Lead Creative Writing Teacher to deliver an after school creative writing programme at partner schools in Lekki, Lagos.

The programme is designed for children aged five to eleven who wish to develop their writing beyond the classroom. Through storytelling, guided writing, poetry and practical creative activities, pupils will learn to explore ideas, create characters and settings, organise their writing, develop their vocabulary and express themselves with increasing confidence.

This role would suit an educator who understands that effective creative writing instruction involves more than giving children a topic and asking them to write. We are looking for someone who can help young writers generate ideas, make purposeful choices, experiment with language, respond to feedback and take pride in completed work.

Location: Lekki, Lagos

Work arrangement: In person

Hours: 90-minute sessions during the school term. The number of sessions offered will depend on the number of participating schools and your availability.

Key Responsibilities

• Plan and deliver engaging creative writing sessions for children aged five to eleven

• Teach storytelling, descriptive writing, poetry, character development, dialogue and other suitable forms of creative writing

• Help pupils generate ideas and develop their individual writing voices

• Guide pupils through planning, drafting, revising, editing and presenting their work

• Use stories, pictures, discussions, objects and other suitable prompts to inspire writing

• Adapt activities to meet the ages, abilities and learning needs of different pupils

• Model effective writing techniques and explain them clearly

• Provide constructive and age appropriate feedback on pupils’ writing

• Create an encouraging learning environment in which pupils feel confident expressing and sharing their ideas

• Support pupils in developing and maintaining individual writing portfolios

• Monitor pupils’ attendance, participation and progress

• Prepare suitable teaching materials and organise resources for each session

• Work professionally with the Writing Assistant and the school’s nominated staff

• Contribute to the presentation or sharing of pupils’ work at the end of the programme

• Follow Jordan Hill and school procedures relating to safeguarding, confidentiality, behaviour, safety and pupil collection

The Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate should:

• Have a degree, NCE or recognised qualification in English, Education, Literature, Creative Writing, Primary Education or a related field

• Have at least three years of relevant experience teaching primary aged children

• Have experience teaching creative writing, composition, storytelling, poetry or literacy

• Demonstrate strong knowledge of English language and children’s writing development

• Be able to help children develop ideas instead of simply correcting their work

• Be able to explain and model writing techniques clearly

• Have strong classroom management skills

• Be able to support pupils with different levels of confidence and attainment

• Have excellent written and spoken English

• Be creative, patient, organised and dependable

• Communicate professionally with pupils, parents, colleagues and school representatives

• Be able to prepare effectively, work independently and meet agreed deadlines

• Be available to work in person in Lekki during the agreed afternoon period

• Understand the importance of safeguarding, confidentiality and appropriate professional boundaries when working with children

Experience leading a writing club, literacy programme or enrichment activity would be an added advantage. Experience in a Montessori or child centred learning environment, children’s publishing, editing or professional writing would also be valuable.
