Why This Programme Matters

Secondary school English demands more from the very start.

• Students must read with greater insight, write with more control, and think with more precision.

• They are also expected to work more independently, respond more actively in lessons, and take greater responsibility for their own understanding.

• In secondary school, students are often expected to ask questions when they are unsure, seek clarification when needed, and persevere through challenge with less direct support than they may have been used to in primary school.

• Strong performance in primary school does not automatically guarantee readiness for these higher expectations.

• Without strong foundations in reading, writing, and critical thinking at a higher level, students can begin secondary school underprepared and may find it harder to thrive as expectations increase.

• The foundation for top GCSE outcomes is laid early through strong habits in reading, writing, and reasoning.

• This programme is designed to close that gap before secondary school begins and help students start with stronger skills, greater confidence, and the academic readiness needed for long-term success.

• AI is becoming part of the learning environment young people are entering. The question is no longer whether students will encounter it, but whether they will have the confidence and judgement to use it well.

• The issue is not the use of AI itself. The concern is the loss of confidence, judgement, and independent thinking that can happen when students rely on it before they have developed secure literacy and reasoning skills.

• Students who are unsure of their own reading, writing, and thinking can become too quick to rely on AI for answers, ideas, and expression. Over time, that can weaken the very habits they most need to develop.

• This programme is designed to strengthen those habits first so that students begin secondary school with the ability to think for themselves, write with confidence, and use technology without becoming dependent on it.

What This Programme Is Designed To Do

The ten-month transition programme is designed to:

Secure the core habits in reading, writing, vocabulary, and reasoning that students need from the very first term of secondary school.

Move students beyond primary-level responses into deeper interpretation, clearer written expression, and more deliberate use of language.

Address the gap between doing well in primary school and actually being confident in meeting the demands of secondary school English studies.

Ensure students begin secondary school with more confidence, stronger academic habits, and better readiness for long-term success.

This programme is for students who:

  • are starting secondary school
  • need to build the strong academic foundation required for success in secondary school English
  • are ready to participate actively and work seriously in a small group setting
  • may still be getting familiar with the expectations of the UK school system as they enter secondary school

Students will develop greater strength in:

  • reading with understanding, inference, and insight
  • speaking, reasoning, and verbal response
  • confidence in asking questions, seeking clarity, and expressing their thinking
  • writing with structure, clarity, and control
  • spelling, grammar, and language accuracy in context
  • organising ideas clearly at sentence and paragraph level
  • confidence in asking questions, seeking clarity, and expressing their thinking
  • the independence and academic readiness needed for a strong start in secondary school English

Why Small Group Learning?

This programme is taught in a small group because secondary school learning does not happen in isolation. Students need to develop the confidence to listen, contribute, ask questions, and respond thoughtfully alongside others. A small group setting allows students to be known individually while also benefiting from discussion, shared thinking, and the healthy stretch that comes from learning with peers.
